It’s Finally Here: The Bonneville Salt Flats

Limited Edition, with Slipcase

Limited Edition, with Slipcase

The wait is over… and for those of you who have been so patient for the last year-plus–even putting down real, cash money to reserve your own copy–we could not be happier to show off the finished product.

The path to publication for The Bonneville Salt Flats began with the selection of images from tens of thousands of photographs that Peter Vincent has taken during his 20-plus years traveling to Bonneville. Hours of sorting, rearranging, writing, and rewriting followed. The layout came together under the direction of John Sticha. Contributors Philip Linhares, Peter deLory, Tom Fritz, Michael Dobrin and Dennis Varni, Kim Vincent, and Ron Jolliffe all added valuable content and context to the photographs.

The result is a 272-page tome that is impressive in its scope, size, and in the quality of its production and content. If you’re reading this I probably don’t need to tell you about Peter Vincent’s photography (here is his website if you need a refresher). Suffice to say that he’s not just a photographer’s photographer; he truly loves and treasures his time on the salt each year, and that comes through loud and clear in the pages of this book.

We created this book to be an enjoyable experience whether you are a hot rodder, a land speed racing junkie, or an admirer of the landscapes of the American West. If that sounds like you, we urge you to check out The Bonneville Salt Flats: Two Decades of Photography by Peter Vincent. You won’t be disappointed.

The standard edition of the book can be purchased at this website, for $85. A limited edition version of only 149 hand-numbered, author-signed books, is available for $300. It includes an exclusive archival print, which by itself may be worth more than the asking price. More than half of these limited editions are already sold, so hurry if you want one!

If those are too rich for your blood, don’t forget that we have a limited run of posters available as well, for $25 including S&H for U.S. customers.

The third and fourth installments in the Stance & Speed Monograph series are (finally) here!

SSM3 SoCal CoverNumber 3 is on the 1934 Ford that is better-known as the So-Cal Coupe. It is written by Ken Gross, with a foreword by Alex Xydias, founder of the So-Cal Speed Shop. As with all of the Monograph Series books, Peter Harholdt shot the primary photos of the car. The book includes several historic photos of the car as well as a full list of the car’s specifications.

SSM4 Watson CoverNumber 4 covers the Watson roadster that A.J. Foyt drove to victory in the 1964 Indianapolis 500, becoming the last front-engined car to do so. The book was written by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s renown historian Donald Davidson, with a foreword by Big Tex himself. We shipped some books to Indy early for the month of May, and it was very well received there.

Bonneville News

If you happened to have been in Utah in August during Speedweek, you may have seen a bearded man in a hat, jeans, and boots, taking pictures at every  possible opportunity. That man is Peter Vincent; he’s been traveling to the Bonneville Salt Flats on photographic missions for more than 20 years.

If you did bump into Peter, he might have handed you a postcard (looking a lot like the image at the top of this post) advertising the upcoming book that we are publishing. The back side of that postcard shows a mockup of the book’s cover, as well as the slipcased limited edition version.

Peter is flying out to Minnesota next weekend so that he, designer John Sticha, and I can put the finishing touches on the layout for the book. We’re all extremely excited about the pages we’ve been putting together. The presentation of Peter’s photographs in this large-format book is going to be something to see and treasure.

Follow Stance & Speed on Facebook and we’ll be sure to post some snapshots as we’re working. And, of course, don’t forget to pre-order your copy of the book, which is scheduled to arrive early in 2013.
